Messi and Ronaldo lock horns in the race for goals (Analysis and Statistics)

Lionel Messi scored his 41st career hat-trick during Barcelona’s 4-0 win over Manchester City on Wednesday to move one shy of Cristiano Ronaldo’s current record number of trebles.

Both Messi and Ronaldo have scored four hat-tricks at international level, while the Real Madrid star has grabbed 38 domestic hat-tricks compared to Messi’s 37, according to Opta.

Ronaldo also leads Messi 557-521 in career goals, having surpassed the five-time Ballon d’Or winner’s tally for three successive seasons.

However, Messi leads Ronaldo 13-9 for goals with club and country this season, with Ronaldo failing to score during Real Madrid’s 5-1 Champions League win over Legia Warsaw on Tuesday. The Barcelona man also set the benchmark for goals in a season with a remarkable 82 in 2011/12.

Despite Messi’s goals this season, Barca are fourth in La Liga and trail second-place Real by two points, with this season’s first blockbuster El Clasico set for December 4 at the Nou Camp.
